By Larry Breen

In JV action vs. Austin Anderson Nov. 29, the Pirates moved to 2-0 on the year by pulling off a surprising comeback victory as they stunned the Trojans, 50–46, with Xavier McGowan and Ayorinde Gibson leading the Modocs in scoring with 10 points apiece. The undermanned ninth graders fell to the Trojans in a heartbreaking loss, 64-43, led by Emillio Ortegon’s 16 points and Steven Scott’s 15. The JV and freshmen played host the La Vega Invitational Tournament Dec. 1-3 with the JV beating Groesbeck, 76-31, and Mexia, 54-36, before falling to Waco High, 60-52. Gibson led the team in scoring in the first two contests and Javon Arnett in the final one. The freshmen clobbered Groesbeck, 67-31, behind Scott's 35, then Mexia, 57-39 (Scott had 20), before being edged out by Waco High, 48-45, despite Scott's 19. Both squads traveled to Groesbeck with the varsity Dec. 6, and the frigid air did not cool down either of the red-hot sub-varsity Runnin’ Pirate teams as the freshmen spanked the Goats, 61–28. Steven Scott led the Pirates with 17 points, and De'Andre Jones added 14, while Emillio Ortegon scored 13 points, and Jacque King chipped in 10, as the Baby Pirates improved to 5–2 on the year. In the JV game, the Pirates improved to 5–1 with their trouncing of Groesbeck, 51-18. Javon Livings led the Pirates in scoring with 14 points, and Xavier McGowan added 10. Both the JV and freshmen returned to action Dec. 9 in the West subvarsity tournament, where the JV beat up on the hosts, 64-35, led by Arnett's 18, and held off Lorena, 39-25 with McGowan scoring 11, while the ninth graders also beat West (60-48), and Lorena, 57-31, behind 32 from Scott and 16 from Quinton Hill vs. the Trojans and 12 from Jones against the Leopards. Before the varsity game against Liberty Hill Dec. 20, the frosh destroyed the visitors, 76-35, with 25 from Devynn McCarter and 21 from Scott, while the JV dropped a 71-53 decision despite 11 each from Arnett and Livings.
