Nike socks, new fad?

http://my.hsj.org/schools/newspaper/tabid/100/view/frontpage/schoolid/4186/articleid/530321/nike_socks_new_fad.aspx

By Alexis Ekstrom, Jaydee Smith

Why do so many guys frequently wear long black Nike socks? “That’s just the new fad I think,” said Robert Smith, sophomore. “A lot of kids like that style.” The word “fad”, according to Webster’s Dictionary , means “an intense and widely shared enthusiasm for something.” Sported by many guys throughout the halls of LHS, this new “fad” continues to grow very popular. The guys and many sports players wear long, black socks-most commonly Nike ones. “I wear them because it attracts the women,” said Tanner Dickeson, sophomore. “And they keep my feet cool and comfortable.” The socks not only keep cool and stay comfortable, but also work great for sports. “They’re good for pretty much any sport you want to wear them for,” said Dickeson. Where did this “fad” start? According to ESPN’s ‘Fab Five’ documentary, five freshmen from the 1991 University of Michigan basketball team, commonly called the “Fab Five”, started the trend. Ever since the team wore black socks, other athletes acquired a taste for them. According to Michael Rothstein, Ann Arbor sports reporter wrote that Michigan guard Eso Akunne said, “Before them, there wasn’t the long shorts or black socks. It allowed people to express themselves and not be afraid to. They were really confident, some say cocky, but confident and they had a lot of swagger.” on annarbor.com. To understand how much the Michigan Fab Five affected the game of basketball, simply look around. From famous NBA players, such as Kobe Bryant and Blake Griffin, to high school and even middle school students, the trend presents itself everywhere. Seeing how this trend gained so much popularity, why would anyone not wear long black socks? Tyson Reis, sophomore, responded with a chuckle, “Well I didn’t have any clean ones.” “I always like short socks because they show off my ripped calves,” Smith said. “I’m not rolling with the crowd here, I’m my own person.”
