Oakland Losses Warriors

http://my.hsj.org/schools/newspaper/tabid/100/view/frontpage/schoolid/4244/articleid/530285/oakland_losses_warriors.aspx

By Segun Giwa

Ever since 1972, The Golden State Warriors have played in Oakland in the outdated Oracle Arena. Starting in 2017 however, the Warriors will return to San Francisco\, where they played from 1961-1972. “I’m upset that the Warriors are moving because now I have to commute farther to watch my favorite team play,” sophomore Ryan Barker said. The decision to move to San Francisco affects many people in the East Bay who have an easy commute to the arena. The Warriors future home is set to be built on Piers 30-32, where parking and traffic will be a major issue when the Warriors start to play there. “I have to take BART all the way to San Francisco because there is no way that I will drive and get stuck in traffic,” said Barker. As much as people in the East Bay don’t want the Warriors to leave, it actually may be a smart decision. For one, they will become a bigger market, meaning they will be able to spend more money on free agents. Secondly, the Warriors play in an arena that is extremely outdated. For years the Warriors have tried to work out a deal with Oakland to get a new arena but they could never agree on a deal. And lastly the Warriors will appeal more to the NBA and its fans because San Francisco is more known and popular than Oakland. This move does not only affect basketball fans however. Since the Warriors are going to San Francisco, this may bring light to the Oakland A’s and Raiders who also have uncertain futures. If Oakland didn’t build the Warriors a new home what makes people think they will build one for the baseball and football teams? People across the bay are scared that the A’s will move into Giants territory in San Jose and the Raiders will leave the bay and go to Los Angeles again. All in all Oakland sports fans should get ready to watch the San Francisco Warriors, and be ready to possibly lose their two other sports franchises as well.
