Opinion: Relax, it's just furniture!!

By Emily Prom

Susanna Trombley
Sophomore atrium

One new couch, loveseat and table was recently added to the sophomore hallway. It's not like we had a whole atrium built for our entertainment. However, our joy of writing "no freshman" signs and keeping the territory "sophomore only" brought uproar through older grades. The seniors decided to take "their" table back to the atrium, saying we didn’t deserve an area to ourselves because they didn’t have one when they were sophomores. Ben Ratliff '14 says he feels "so broken heartened that they (older students) think we are not mature enough to have furniture." Religion teacher Mr. Edward Hester, whose classroom is in the sophomore hall, says he "tried to get furniture out in that area earlier, but the higher powers of the school needed to deliberate the topic before allowing that to be done.” The sophomores could not control the fact that furniture was put in the area of our hallway, for our use. Nor did any students push/beg/whine for the new furniture. Mr. Hester also says that “two years ago, I noticed scuff marks from the students continually sitting against the wall and I asked Dr. Ferdinand to put furniture in that area. He needed to go through other sources, but they finally decided to change it." Every year that scuffs are made, is another year that janitors and volunteer teachers have to repaint that wall white. Sophomore Clare Carney '14 says, "The juniors and seniors need to suck it up and be mature adults about this, because they need to be role models for us." Strong feelings about phrases like "immature sophomores" and "pampered grade" are some of the things that have bothered the sophomores the most, especially because it only started when the furniture was added. No sophomore knew about the addition of furniture, nor did any ask for furniture to be put in. For the older grades to say things about unfairness, or that we whine, is completely unnecessary. Kate Pulles '14 says, “We deserve this area with furniture because it's a privilege we get over the freshman grade, but is nothing compared to the atrium area the juniors and seniors get that we are unable to use."
