By Torbertha Torbor

UC DAVIS received the top grade from junior Torbertha Torbor after her tour of four campuses. She visted the colleges as part of Upward Bound, a program to help students prepare for college that is run by UC Berkeley.

College visits are great experiences for high school seniors and juniors who would like to attend college. Recently I visited four colleges and learned a lot from each. They were: Humboldt State University, Chico State University, Sacramento State University and the University of California at Davis. On each campus, I learned about class sizes, number of students enrolled and programs that are available. HUMBOLDT STATE Humboldt State is a small college. The class ratio is 25 students to one teacher and 15,000 to 16,000 students are enrolled. I also learned about financial aid, sports, clubs and other programs. The thing I liked best about Humboldt State is the EOP, which stands for Educational Opportunity Program. This program supports new scholars, giving them the opportunity to participate in summer programs and qualify for scholarships. To participate in this program, students must be among the first generation in their family to go to college. HSU has all sports colleges usually have, except American football. Grade: B CHICO STATE Chico State University is a small college, but not as small as Humboldt. It has a lot of facilities. The thing I liked best about Chico State is that it has a lot of programs and sports. It also has a good environment in which one can focus on studies. I also liked the programs, clubs and garden that are located on campus. This campus really interests me. The only negative thing is that it is too far from home. Grade: A- SACRAMENTO STATE Sacramento State University is a big school, but not big as UC Davis. Like Humboldt, it provides the Education Opportunity Program (EOP), which provides freshmen a Summer Bridge. Summer Bridge is a free six-week program that lets students take classes at Sacramento State before their first semester of college. This program is designed to help new EOP freshmen transition quickly from high school to college. To be considered for Summer Bridge, students must be admitted to EOP. The thing I like best about Sacramento States University is that it offers students the best free tutoring classes. The worst thing is that I don’t like the environment. Grade: A UC DAVIS Among all the colleges I visited, UC Davis is the biggest university and one of the smartest universities in California. I learned that more people attend UC Davis because it is a place to learn, discover and engage. I strongly suggest that students who are interested in a big school and would like to challenge themselves attend UC Davis because it’s competitive. Grade: A+ The four-college visit was sponsored by the Upward Bound, a summer program at UC Berkeley that offers all California’s high school students the opportunity to learn and prepare for college. The purpose of visiting all these colleges was to help students know which college they are interested in. For more information, contact ( 510) 568-9482
