After more than three years, OHS has an official mascot — sophomore Jonathan Porter. Tryouts were held on the Nov. 28 for the position. The potential mascots were judged on their appearance, enthusiasm, and on the routine that they had to make up on their own. Five people showed up for the audition but only Porter was selected. Before earning the job, Porter wrote an essay, made up a routine, got a physical and was evaluated by judges. Porter’s job will include performing his own routine, and keeping the crowd moving during sporting events. He will perform at games and assemblies. Porter said his job has its perks. “Being the mascot is awesome,” said Porter.“ I get to hang out with the cheerleaders.” Cheerleading coach Jessica McMurry made the decision to pick Porter as mascot. “I am excited that we finally have the opportunity to have a school mascot,” she said. “I think that it will help boost school spirit.”
