By Mari Fenton

Winter is soon approaching, and student drivers will be heading out on the slick roads. Many need to take the proper procedures when driving on winter roads. “Always watch the news before leaving for school,” said Lyla Britton from the Shelbyville Driving Institute. “My parents do [watch the news], and then they tell me,” said Junior Abby Wade. Due to the cold temperatures, there may be ice on a student's car, and one may need to know how to get ice of the car in the proper way. “Start a car five minutes early. That way, the ice will thin out,” said Britton. When walking to the car, one needs to make sure to get all the snow off. In that way, later, when a student is driving, the snow on the hood does not fall down onto the front windshield. Starting a car early gives the car time to warm up and gets the fluids moving because the car has been sitting in the cold weather all night. “I have my little sister [Audrey Wade] start my car in the morning,” said Wade. In case of ice, one should have an ice scraper in the car, which will help get the ice off the car. The scraper works much better than a credit card found in a student's wallet. “I keep an ice scraper in my trunk,” said Senior Cassondra Barrows. To prepare a car for the cold wreather ahead, one can take simple inexpensive procedures. “It is important to make sure your windshield wiper fluid [has] antifreeze in it,” said Britton. The antifreeze will help the ice melt off the car. Another procedure a student would want to take is to make sure there is more than a quarter tank of gas in the car. “The gas can freeze [due to the cold temperatures],” continued Britton. According to Britton, one should always drive under the speed limit in snow. If a student feels like he cannot drive in the cold conditions, he should take the bus. Driving on the road during cold weather can be dangerous. “Last winter, I went in a complete circle in the student parking lot. That was a pretty scary experience,” said Wade.
