By Jose Alamo & Jesse Vasquez

This year's track and field team accomplished 90% of what they wanted, according to Coach Sandoval. Track and field's strong point this year was its sprinters, and Coach Sandoval would like to improve on the hurdelers next year. Track and Field senior Gedyon "Jedi" Kiflezgi was named Venice High School athlete of the year. He went to Division 1 state finals in cross country in the fall, but missed a chance to go to state track and field for the one mile by one second at City Finals at Birmingham High School on May 25. Joining Kiflezgi at city finals, was the boys frosh/soph 4x100 team, and long distance runner Kelsey Almendariz. There were two boys and one girl that went to city finals. "It was a very close race I had to battle back from last place with about two laps to go and was just trying to get at least third so I could go to state finals but I missed it by a second or so," said Kiflezgi. Sophomore Kelsey Almendariz, had another great season, making it to city finals in the mile for the second consecutive year. She didn't place as well as she wanted but she is hoping to make a lot of noise next year when she moves up to varsity. Coach Sandoval expects great things from her from his top returning girl, next year in both cross country and track and field. Coach Sandoval is looking forward to Kelsey Almendariz and Elliot Goldstein to step up for track next year. "Concentrating on field events has proven worth it," said Captain Brian Esquivel addressing their track and field season overall.
