By Travis Hong

GleeGiveANote

Arroyo High School’s Band and Colorguard have entered the GLEE Give a Note competition to gain funding for the programs. However, they need everyone’s sustained support to reach the top. In this competition, schools across the nation compete with submitted videos for votes. Anyone can vote for the school they believe best deserves funding until November 8. The schools with the most votes will then enter a final round where the National Association for Music Education will decide the winners. As the competition’s official website states, “GLEE Give A Note will support music education by awarding $1 million dollars in prize money to music programs in jeopardy throughout the United States.” GLEE Give A Note will give away $1 million dollars in total with the top 3 schools receiving a $50,000 grand prize. 10 first prize winners will receive $25,000 dollars each, and 60 second prize winners will receive $10,000 dollars. “I think [GLEE Give a Note] is an amazing opportunity to display creativity combined with need,” declared Band Director Mr. Joe Massaro. When Massaro received a mailer and poster regarding this competition, he informed the band leadership about it and how it would benefit Arroyo’s music program financially. In the end, Juniors Nadine Binuya and Senior Amelia Gonzalez sang the song in the video, Seniors Michelle Viorato and Junior Stacey Tran edited the video, and Senior Clivia Ngan played the piano. “Many of us dedicated our own free time to discuss the layout of the video; write and perform the song; and eventually put the whole video together,” stated Nadine Binuya, “It took us about two weeks to get all the footage together, but I have to give props to Stacy Tran. She stayed up all night working on that video.” “Editing the video took about 15 hours even though it’s only 2 minutes long,” explains Stacey Tran, “It feels great just to see everyone in the band getting involved in the voting process and spreading the word.” Business Department teacher Paul Arevalo is one of the many people who are supporting Band and Colorguard in this competition. “The biggest key [to success in the competition] is not how you start the race, but how you run the race,” reveals Arevalo, “You see, there are a lot of schools that are getting a lot of votes right now, but it’s the schools whose students vote every day that will win. It’s very important that all knights vote every day [and support band and colorguard] with their e-mails, twitters, facebooks, and tumblr notices.” Don’t forget to vote for Arroyo’s Band and Colorguard everyday on gleegiveanote.com.
