BCS Bowl System a total joke

http://my.hsj.org/schools/newspaper/tabid/100/view/frontpage/schoolid/614/articleid/321747/bcs_bowl_system_a_total_joke.aspx

By Kyle Wolfe

Unless something is changed with the way Bowl Championship Series (BCS) officials handle college football postseason, college football teams will have their postseason fates decided by computer rankings and votes rather than by deciding the best teams by letting them play. The current system creates four BCS bowls after the season ends, along with the BCS national championship game. The winners of large conferences earn automatic berths and the rest of the teams ranked inside the top 10 in the BCS poll fill out the championship bowl games. The current system can leave top class teams that play in smaller conferences out of the games and winners of weaker, larger divisions into the games. The champions of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), Big East, Big Ten, Big 12, Pacific Ten (Pac 10) and Southeastern Conference (SEC) all earn automatic bids into a BCS game. Teams who play for weak conferences, such as Conference USA or the Mountain West, face very slim odds at making these top games, even with undefeated records. These teams are left out because they are said to have a weak schedule, where as large conferences, like the Big East and Big Ten, have turned into a joke, consistently trampled in bowl games. BCS buster teams, like Texas Christian University (TCU) of Boise State University, deserve a shot at the national championship after finishing the season undefeated. With the current bowl system, they will never get a shot at glory, no matter how much they win every game by. Each of the teams who make the four BCS bowls should have a playoff for the national championship. This is the only way to prove who really is the best team in the country, not just who can make the network officials the most money. The champions of the major conferences should still earn their bid to the playoff; but teams from smaller conferences who finish the regular season as a top team in the country should also be there. BCS officials steer away from this playoff system only because they are scared they will lose money from viewers, but no college football fan, in his/her right mind, would want to miss a game where a small team from Idaho can beat up on a national powerhouse like Ohio State. If they really care about actually playing football and are not blinded by the money issue, they will eventually see the nation is crying out for a playoff series. Millions of people watch professional football playoffs the Super Bowl every year and even millions more would love to do the same with a college playoff. If officials are waiting for a small team like TCU to pound a big conference team like Florida before they are convinced, then what are they possibly waiting for? Last year, Utah wiped the floor with SEC powerhouse Alabama in a BCS game to finish as the only undefeated team in the nation, and was still not given a share of the national championship. University of Florida home the title, even with one loss, because they play in a major conference. In 2008, Boise State pulled off a miraculous upset of Oklahoma in the BCS Sugar Bowl to finish at 12-0 and still was disappointed to be cut out from the title as well. BCS officials must fix this problem, or college football fans will continue to create uproars around the nations. The fans have been calling for playoffs for years, it is just up to the BCS to answer.
