All I Ever Wanted (Deluxe Version) Kelly Clarkson «««« “All I Ever Wanted” is the fourth studio album by American pop singer Kelly Clarkson, released on March 10. Masquerade was originally chosen to be the title of the album but was changed to All I Ever Wanted because Clarkson felt that there were albums with similar titles on the charts, such as Pink’s Funhouse and Britney Spears’s Circus. “My Life Would Suck Without You” The album’s first single was released on January 13. On January 28 Billboard announced that the single went from #97 to #1 on the billboard Hot 100, making the biggest leap to the top in the chart’s history. The song has disco rhythms and lots of synth-dance-pop layers over an up beat guitar pattern. That keeps it from sounding too artificial. Clarkson sings about how even though a relationship is over one can still feel like you both belong together hence my life would suck without you. “I Do Not Hook Up” the albums second single (along with “Long Shot”) was originally recorded and written by Katy Perry. The song is a dissertation on the virtue of taking things slow in a relationship. After just one listen you’ll find yourself already singing along. “Don’t Let Me Stop You” One of my favs off the album goes back to Clarkson’s true rock/pop feel from other albums. The track is very similar to “Behind These Hazel Eyes,” and “Since U Been Gone”. “Don’t Let Me Stop You” is about a relationship nearing its rocky end. The song starts off explaining how she used to be a little bit shy, kept her deepest feelings inside and how showing her emotions has always been hard. But it had to come to end and she has to be brave. The chorus has to be the best part of the song expressing how much she feels about the whole situation. “Don’t let me stop you from doing what you want to do, If you want to leave baby you can leave,” “Just don’t pretend that you’re into me if it ain’t true.” It’s brilliant how the lyrics of the song really describe the stages of a relationship. The music in this album is very different from Clarkson’s previous albums. The album has a lot more dance beats, but doesn’t steer away from Clarkson’s empowering lyrics. This album is a definite buy. Track after track Clarkson doesn’t fail the listener. Keri Hilson In a Perfect World… «««« In a Perfect World… is the debut album by American singer-songwriter Keri Hilson. The album was originally slated for release in 2007 but was pushed back multiple times into 2009, as Hilson stated herself, mainly due to failed single releases. After numerous delays the album was released on March 24, 2009. The album debuted on the Billboard 200 at number four, selling over 94,00 copies in it’s first week. When explained the title Hilson said “It’s my way of saying nothing in the world is perfect and no person in it is, either. None of us are exempt from certain hardships and heartbreaks. It was really important for me to write songs that women can relate to from real situations. I didn’t want to do an album that painted [me] as perfect because no matter how things look, no one is.” The mid-tempo ballad “Energy” was the first release of the album. The single failed in the United States charts. Hillson sings about a relationship that ended and its taking all of her energy to move forward. I still fail to understand how the single failed to char. It was all the components of a chart topping hit. “Return the Favor” the second single featured Timbaland. The single also failed to chart within any of the top 100 charts. After two failed singles “Turnin Me On” was released and was the first release to chart in the United States. The single debuted at #90 and has since reached #15. Hilson shines best when she lets her feminine swagger strut. The album does have a decent amount of hits but it’s an album you could barrow from a friend or just buy the better song on iTunes. R.O.O.T.S. Flo Rida «««« R.O.O.T.S. is the second studio album by American rapper Flo Rida. The title is an acronym for “Route of Overcoming the Struggle”. The album was released on March 30. In an interview with Billboard magazine, Flo Rida stated the inspiration for the album comes from his success and knowing that it wasn’t an overnight thing. It also takes inspiration turn an album, so “I had to really get everything together.” The album’s lead single, “Right Round sold 636,000 digital copies in a single week, the biggest first-week sales in digital history, topping the Billboard Hot 100 for six straight weeks. The songs backing track is “You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)” originally by Dead or Alive. The single features newcomer Kesha, and while the sample works perfectly, a simple substitution of Keri Hilson would have given this song more leverage. “Sugar” is the second single features singer Wynter Gordon. The song recreates elements from Eiffel 65’s “Blue (Da Ba Dee). The song is very catchy but that’s only because of the elements of “Blue” This is one of the albums only highlights.
