By David Contreras

Science Instructor Shannon Beck students competed in the state Science Olympiad at Texas A&M University recently. They finished in last place.
She said students do a lot of research themselves.
“We meet every Tuesday, and Thursday at Cigarroa and study books, cd’s, and web sites to research how to build the projects,” Beck explained. She said that there was only one meet this year.
“This year we only competed in regionals Science Olympiad,” Beck said.
She explained how Science Olympiad helps students with their classes and TAKS.
“Anything that expands your knowledge is good,” she said.
She finds preparing for the Science Olympiad interesting.
“Students have the opportunity to explore and study topics that are interesting to them,” Beck said.
Beck explained how she chose students for the team.
“Students are in the Gear-up program so 15 kids signed up for it,” she said.
Sophomore strings student and team member Monica Rosales said the Olympiad helped her with TAKS.
“Yes I understood the TAKS questions better,” she said
Rosales said they were never distracted.
“We were motivated 24/7. We even practiced after practice,” she said.
Sophomore string student and team member Brandon Romero said the Olympiad helped him with the TAKS.
“I thought it was easier,” he said.
Unlike Rosales, Romero thought keeping focus was a challenge.
“It was hard to keep focus because we had so many things going on, like TAKS,” he said.
