By MaryJo Gutscher & Erin Burrows

At Timken Senior High we have experienced many new things. This year we are excited to have several new staff members. Two of them are Erin Ponn and Brent Campbell. Erin Ponn is a licensed cosmetologist and also the new cosmetology teacher at Timken. Mrs. Ponn likes the interaction with the students. She loves teaching them new things and teaching juniors things they have never learned before. Mrs. Ponn likes teaching at Timken because she lives in Canton, Ohio and she has a beautiful new lab to work with in the Early College building, which is on the first floor in the commons. This year Mrs. Ponn wants to see her eight seniors pass the state board exam. She wants her juniors to experience tasks, become confident and comfortable with what they are doing. When we asked Mrs. Ponn how her teachers in school encouraged her, she had a big smile on her face. She keeps in touch with her cosmetology teacher she had when she was in school. She can call on her anytime she needs help or even if she needs someone to talk to. There is nothing about her teaching job that she doesn’t like. She loves it because it is a new environment for her, and a whole new set of students to work with. Mrs. Ponn’s favorite teaching memory was on April 1st a few years back. During a visit from the state, her class had planned to get up and walk out on her. The class went through with the plan, but lucky for Mrs. Ponn, the official from Columbus understood. He had been tricked earlier in the day. Mrs. Ponn feels that the pay at Timken is good because she loves her students enough to not take another job. In Mrs. Ponn’s free time, she relaxes. She loves to swim in her in-ground swimming pool. She also loves traveling with her husband to different places. Brent Campbell teaches tenth grade health foundations. What he likes about teaching is the relationships with the students that he has. Mr. Campbell likes teaching at Timken because it is a diverse group of students. If there was no diversity, then teaching his students would be boring because they would all be the same. This year, what Mr. Campbell wants to see out of his students is them realizing that they only have two more years of school left. He also wants them to understand that they are going to be starting their adult lives soon. Mr. Campbell’s teachers encouraged him in school to make good decisions and encouraged him to do his best in whatever he was going into. His favorite teaching memory was going on a Cedar Point trip with his students. Mr. Campbell feels that his pay at Timken is fair. In Mr. Campbell’s free time he likes to go hunting and exercise. He says “you got to stay in shape to be able to run from a deer or any wild life animal is going to chase you, and you’re going to need muscles to carry a 100 pound deer or more.” Now we all know a little more about two new staff members. Would you like to know about other new teachers at Timken? Join us in the fun of getting to know more new teachers in our next issue!
