The world certainly has been watching! To diehard fans of the explosively popular trilogy, The Hunger Games , it is not surprising that the movie adaptation has sat pretty much on top of the box office for four weeks running. This week is the first it is not on top of the box office, dropping instead to third place behind Think Like a Man and The Lucky One. With a profit of $302,450,722 as of April 8, it has been breaking records and perhaps causing even more hype than the books. The long awaited movie, which was praised from the start for its accuracy and truthful depictions of the characters and the story as a whole, was all but impossible to get into on its opening day of March 23 unless tickets were bought in advance. Most amazingly, the film was so highly anticipated that when all was said and done on opening weekend, The Hunger Games had earned itself the title of third biggest opening of a film in history. With a $152,535,747 profit, it is behind only The Dark Knight at second with $158,411,483, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part Two, which had the biggest weekend at the box office bringing in $169,198,427. As of April 18 The Hunger Games is still atop the box office even with such hit movies as Titanic running. Undoubtedly, its success will carry on for many weeks to come and lead to an even more phenomenally successful sequel when Catching Fire, the second book in the series, is released in 2013.
