By Samantha Munsey

I recently took a test that is intended to determine the rest of my life. Every year thousands of juniors and seniors in high schools across the country take the SAT’s to find out if they are ivy league material or if community college is more their fit. This test was created to set the bar equal for all students wishing to expand their educational career, but instead it strips from the student the very aspects of their personality and talents, which make them an individual, and turns them in to merely a score. Many colleges argue that they need you to submit SAT scores in order to determine if you qualify for any scholarship related programs. But admissions officers use the scores to pick who is more academically suited to attend their schools. I for one think that SAT’s should not be required to attend any university. They show nothing of the individual’s character or work ethic. Many colleges would rather see a high SAT score over a well-written admission essay. Why is this? Wouldn’t you think they would prefer a well-rounded person to one who simply tests well? Many doors and opportunities are closing for young minds because of one test. College life is so much more than just 25-minute essays and multiple-choice tests. It is a life changing experience that everyone should be able to have. But tests like the SAT rip that experience out of many deserving hands.
