A Great Beginning

By Fernando Zambrano

On August 14 th , the Teague Lions traveled to Buffalo to play in their first scrimmage of the new season. The players and staff have been working hard to prepare for this season and will hopefully make it the greatest that the school has had. Fans have also long waited to see the Lions and how the new coaches have prepared them for the season. The scrimmage was a three-way in which the Lions played against the Buffalo Bison and the Normangee Panthers. The scrimmage was organized so that two teams played while the other rested, and with the scrimmage being held during the hottest part of the day, the rest was well needed. The Lions started off the scrimmage on defense against the Bison offense. This was the first real test for the Lions and their new defensive scheme. The new coaching staff for the Lions has not only changed their defensive scheme but also their offensive. They have been working hard to learn it and have made some good progress. However, for some of the veteran players, learning something completely different than that of what they had learned to live by has been challenging and it showed a couple of times during the scrimmage. Buffalo had some good plays at the start by running the ball against the Lions, however, the Lions woke up soon and held the Bison to minimum yardage for the rest of the time. After a break, the Lions ran their offense against the Panthers. The Lion offense had a great performance from the start as it seemed that the Panthers could not stop them. Unfortunately however, the Lions suffered a loss as one of their players, Bershard Johnson, after a few plays on offense. With their minds on their fallen teammate, the Lions finished the rest of the scrimmage strong. The Lions made a great impression as they gave a preview to the fans on what to look forward to this season. Head coach Josh Finney says that there are still many things that the team still needs to work on and that there is much more progress to be made. Despite this, he was happy with how the team played, being their first time to try their new game plan on other varsity teams. He, along with the players, is thankful to the fans and appreciate their support. They hope that more and more people will come out and support them and fill the stands again that have been empty for some time now. They will continue to work hard as they prepare for each new opponent in hopes of giving the town something they have never seen, a state championship.
