By Cindy Soria

Athletics secretary Mrs. Rosalina Martinez reviews the sports schedule for the week. While most of her time was spent behind the desk in the athletics office, Mrs. Martinez has been a familiar sight to C.V. fans selling tickets game nights for over 31 years.

A: I started to work for CVHS September 15, 1977 as Athletic & Activities Secretary. Q: What are some of the responsibilities you have had working in the athletics office? A: I make sure that all athletes are covered by insurance, have had physicals and have a 2.0. GPA; type schedules; make sure that officials are assigned to each event when needed and request transportation for each away event; keep up with all CIF rules and regulations; and prepare awards for each sports’ banquet. These are just a few of the duties I’ve performed. Q: How has the job changed over the years? A: Technology! When I started here, the first assignment was to type and make copies on a mimeograph machine. Many of you don’t even know what that is. Typewriters and adding machines were the only machines used. Copy machines, fax machines, and computers didn’t exist. How did I survive? Q: What has been your favorite part of the job? A: Working with the students and seeing them go on to college and succeed in their careers; being DVL and CIF Champions; and being able to be here to see my daughter, granddaughter and grandson (next year) also graduate from CVHS. Q: You have worked with a lot of coaches over the years; do any really stand out in your memory? A: I have always told everyone that the coach who has made my job the easiest has been Coach Paul Salow. He knows he has a spring sport and that by then most of the budget will be gone. He submits his list and if he doesn’t get what he requests, he does the best he can with what he has. I respect him because he has made it possible for many of our students to visit places such as Hawaii, Las Vegas, Florida and Tahoe. These are places that many of our students would have never visited had it not been for his determination that they could fundraise the amount needed. He doesn’t give up. Q: How many athletic directors have you worked with? What has that been like? A: I have worked with six different AD’s. Each was very different in the way they work, and I had to adjust to the way they did things. I worked as secretary to Mr. Richard Ramirez for over ten years. We had a wonderful working relationship. He taught me to give 110% to the job no matter how hard or tired you were. I have great respect and admiration for Mr. GREEN & GOLD. Coach Rob Diaz, who later became my boss as Athletic Director, will forever be in my heart. I remember the day I met him. He told me he wanted to coach any sport that had an opening. He became freshman baseball coach and worked himself up as Athletic Director. I loved him dearly. May he rest in peace. Q: What will you miss the most about CV? The job? A: The students and the wonderful people I have met throughout the years. Q: Any special comments you would like to make about your time here? A: When I started working here in September 1977, Mr. Marty Holguin was just a sophomore here at CVHS. Who would think that when he would come back to CVHS as Athletic Director, I would still be here as athletics secretary? Being Athletic Director is a hard job and very demanding. I feel good about leaving because I have seen that Mr. Marty Holguin will give 100% plus to this job
