By Samantha Jean-Baptiste

Flashy neon lights, up to date information on the latest news in South Florida, and infamous host that keep the show entertaining, Deco Drive has been one of South Florida’s television entertainment for years. Although Deco Drive has had a tough and edgy past, today it is a way for South Florida to keep up with a blend of news, entertainment, celebrity profiles, gossip, and of course some South Florida glamour. The show has been through its selection of host, but the pair Louis Aguirre and Lynn Martinez have been the life of it. Hosting Deco Drive together for 4 years, the pair has become a great team. “I love working with Lynn. We have fun together on the show,” said Aguirre. While Aguirre and Martinez may be hosting Deco Drive together now, they have been on their own separate paths that have led them there. Aguirre grew up wanting to be an actor and eventually he was able to land roles in hit shows like Sex in the City and JAG. “I wanted to be an actor, but my parents were very traditional,” explained Aguirre. He attended the University of Miami where he majored in communications and was able to study performance art. He was able to begin his television career with Telemundo in 1989 and from there he took off. Aguirre has been to Los Angeles, Washington D.C., and New York, where he able to build up on his skills. He was able to win an Emmy for a series he did called Miracles in the Making. The series was based on modern day miracles. Aguirre came back to Miami in 2003 and has been reporting for Deco Drive since. “I’m having fun here. I get to show the beautiful side of South Florida,” said Aguirre. Over the years Aguirre learned that broadcasting wasn’t for him. He considers himself a T.V. personality. “Covering murders and such wasn’t for me, it affected my life,” explained Aguirre. His advice to those who are interested in the field is to “Make sure it’s what you love. That way you won’t feel the sacrifices”. Lynn Martinez career as a journalist has also been quite a journey. At a young age she also wanted to be an actress but later changed her mind. “I’ve always like writing, but I fell in love with broadcasting,” said Martinez. Martinez has a masters and a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Webster University in St. Louis, Missouri. She soon found that her skills would get her farther than her degrees. “It took me 6 months to find a job after I graduated. I had a masters, but nobody cared,” said Martinez. She eventually found a producing/anchor position in Cadillac, Michigan. There she taught herself how to produce. “I never dreamt of being there. I knew had to be somewhere else,” explained Martinez. And she was right. Martinez came to WSVN in 1991 and has been working there for 16 years. Aside from hosting Deco Drive she also anchors the 4:30 pm, 5:30 pm, and 6:30 pm news. Martinez has found a way to balance covering news and also entertainment. “I think everyone has two sides. I just relax. News is more serious but then I get to cover something lighter,” said Martinez. She also has to balance her life as a mom and wife with her career as a journalist. “It’s very hard. Whoever said you can have it all lied. I just have a really good husband, a good nanny, and some friends. I enjoy it though,” said Martinez. Both Aguirre and Martinez love what they do. They agree that loving what you do is the most important thing. Deco Drive will continue to be South Florida’s entertainment, especially with Lynn and Louie keeping them entertained.
