Starbucks welcomes a new drink

http://my.hsj.org/schools/newspaper/tabid/100/view/frontpage/schoolid/806/articleid/229469/starbucks_welcomes_a_new_drink.aspx

By Danielle Simler

Please welcome a new addition to the Starbucks menu: Vivanno Starbucks, born in July, weighing 16 ounces, for a whopping $3.75. Vivanno is the newest member of the Starbucks family. It is a new smoothie that comes in two different flavors: orange-mango and banana-chocolate. The orange-mango version, made with Naked Juice, has a very sweet, refreshing taste. I was not very fond of this flavor because I didn’t enjoy the orange and mango flavors together but it will be a favorite of those who enjoy that taste. “I think it is delicious because it’s so fruity and it tastes like Jamba Juice,” senior Nicci Condon said. Senior Nathan Doty also tried the orange-mango Vivanno, but he did not have the same reaction as Condon. “This is like mango water,” Doty said. “It is so watered down.” After trying the drink, Doty despised it so much that he was thankful for having his Chipotle burrito in front of him to “ help get this taste out of my mouth.” The banana-chocolate version has a different and better taste than the orange-mango, but nine out of ten AHS customers who I talked to said that they wouldn’t buy it again. The banana-chocolate was bitter and not very sweet. “It tastes like banana and chocolate, watered down, with Splenda added to it,” junior Richard Camp said. “I would most definitely not buy this beverage again.” Sophomore Victoria Wren agreed with Camp. “It’s really bubbly,” Wren said. “There is a lot of foam and it tastes chalky. I don’t think this will sell well.” According to Starbucks employees, the Vivanno drinks sold very well when they first came out, but sales have slowed down since then. I found most aspects of this drink to be unappealing, especially the fact that the only size it comes in is Grande, which can be very inconvenient to some Starbucks’ customers. Also, this drink costs $3.75, which is pricey. After trying both the orange-mango and the banana-chocolate Vivanno smoothies, I agree with most of the ten Arapahoe students who tried the drink. This drink was not a good addition to the Starbucks’ menu. Most customers have high expectations for Starbucks because of the delicious drinks they serve, but the Vivanno smoothie does not compare to others on the Starbucks menu.
