By Mike Kunis

Off to a rough start this year, the girl’s varsity volleyball team is currently trying to re-cooperate after last year’s loss of star senior players. With a fruitful season last year, spiking it all the way to the state finals with a stunning record of 20-2, the team took a hard hit as they parted with 2009 seniors including, Sam Rosario and eight others, three of which were all county players. With the season still young the team remains hopeful that they can live up to last year’s glory. With a string of up-and-coming players including, mid blocker Liz Gorman (’11), 3 rd years Ally Marchino (’12) and Jenna Clemens (’11), along with 2 nd year sister and focal point of the team, Emily Clemens (’13), there is no doubt that they will make a comeback from a long summer break. Seniors this year, including Lindsey Capola and Jeanna Damm, hope to lead the team to victory. “We want to make it as far as counties this year and with such great coaches it is definitely possible”, says Jenna Clemens (’11), “and if we play hard as a team we can definitely push to improve our record.” With a team as young as the season is now and having so much potential getting it together on the court will be an easy task. With a recent win against Sachem North on Monday the 14 th , the team is in high spirits as they prepare to take on Bay Shore, Central Islip , Connetquot , Northport and Smithtown West in the upcoming week. Although the team is geared to surpass last year’s title, winning is not the team’s main focus. The team’s coach, Kellie Block, is more determined to get the girls to understand each other and the game more thoroughly as well as better the team’s skills on the court than anything else. With practice and improvement the team is sure to rebuild last year’s dream team without worry.
