By Andrew Mowry

Despite a disappointing team performance in their final competition of the season, the Scituate High School cheerleaders had a lot to be proud about this past season. After failing to qualify for regionals last weekend at Johnson & Wales University, the ladies season came to an end, and for five seniors who put on their uniform for the last time. Senior captain Melissa Gregoire said there’s a lot she’s going to miss about cheerleading. “I’m going to miss stunting and just joking around with the team and having fun at practices. I’m also really going to miss the feeling you get before competitions.” Also leaving the team after this season are seniors, Marissa DeAngelis, Kayla Dellefratte, Ali Earle, and Ashley Phillips. “These five seniors will be greatly missed. They have a lot to look back on though for their high school cheerleading career,” said head coach Sharon Terciera. “ I wish them well next year at college!” Marissa and Ali received $500 scholarships from the RI Cheerleading Coaches Association (RICCA) at their competition in Portsmouth two weeks ago, where Scituate tied for third with Smithfield High School. The day before, at Mount St. Charles, the ladies came in sole possession of third place, and would have come in second if not for a five-point penalty for a hair elastic infraction. With the seniors gone, it’s now up to the underclassmen to step up and lead the team. Juniors: Alyssa Littlejohn, Hope O’Brien, Gianna Hesford, Alyssa Christiansen, and Renee Widele expect to lead the team next season. “They have so much potential, and if they continue to put energy into everything, I know they will only have success in the future,” said Marissa.
