By Drew Antonelli

Senior captian Laura Gould and junior Katie Birell show nothing but smiles as they beat Prout in a post-season thriller.

The unbelievable season finished with a 15-3 record which was highlighted by a last second Division II North title were the Scituate Lady Spartans. “A mirror image of the late 90’s girls varsity team flashed all season long.” Coach Jean Angell tells a source from Hsgametime.com in an interview, commenting on her 07-08 varsity basketball team. Looking for a little help from Burrillville High, the varsity ladies crossed their fingers. They first had to put themselves into a position for help. The Lady Spartans went on to beat Mount St. Charles Academy leaving them with a 14-4 season (tied 2nd place) the ladies left their hopes on BHS. The Lady Broncos pulled out a stunning upset over Woonsocket High by 5 points, leaving them tied in 2nd place with Mount St. Charles. More importantly helping the team win the D-2 north title. The D2 North champs would be the number one seed entering the post-season tournament. Narragansett, 16th and last seed, were the Lady Spartans' first obstacle on the road to the trophy. “Never sleep on the 16th seed; never sleep on anyone in high school playoffs.” Angell told her team as she looked around and saw the reflection of her late 90’s teams. They listened. The ladies of Scituate didn’t let their coach down. Winning the game 50-38 was a good lift and a confidence builder for both the young players to get a feel of a playoff atmosphere and the veterans of the team to get a playoff win and some experience under their belts. “We’re targets out there. Everyone wants to knock off the number one seed.” Angell explained as she prepared for Prout High School. The second round game featured Katie Birrell, junior, scoring her 1,000 career point and hitting the game winning free-throw with no time left on the clock, beating Prout 51-50. Onward the ladies moved to a rematch of last year’s championship game between Scituate and Barrington. Advancing to a game that gives the remaining players from last years finalist team a shot at revenge wouldn’t get any easier this year. Barrington had a convincing 29-9 halftime lead that brought flashbacks of last year's game into the minds of Scituate players and fans. Holding down Scituate'stop scorers, Birrell with 7 and Corsi with 11, was Barringtons key to winning the rematch. Barrington went on to play in the D2 state championship for a second time in a row, defeating Mount St. Charles 37-30. Despite the semi-final loss, one thing that everyone can agree on is that the Lady Spartans gave Scituate one of the most exciting seasons that girls basketball has seen in this town. Season Highlights included: 1/29/2008 @ North Providence: Although resulting in a 60-63 loss, the Lady Spartans had the North Providence fans standing up for most of the second half of a thriller. 2/21/2008 Mount St. Charles @ Scituate: Doing all they could to put themselves into the position to win the D2 title the ladies got the news that Burrillville had upset Woonsocket 46-41 making the Lady Spartans D2 North Champions. 2/28/2008@ RIC vs. Narragansett: Defeating Narragansett 50-38 in their first playoff game. 3/2/2008 @ RIC vs. Prout: Defeating Prout by a single point in a game that also featured junior Katie Birrell who hit the game winning free-throw and scoring her 1000th point
