By Bethany Butler, Staff Writer

New York City at sunrise.

It doesn’t take much effort to learn new things that have happened here in Hockinson. As some of you may have heard, many members from the Hockinson High School Drama Club have recently spent five extraordinary days in the Big Apple. April twenty fourth was the big day that thirty-two people from Hockinson boarded the 11:30 red-eye to New York City and began what would become a trip of a lifetime. After the much needed tourist activities and introductions to our tour guides for the week; our first day in the city quickly drew to our first night in the city. It was then time to view two of the most illustrious shows on Broadway, Phantom of the Opera and Les Miserables. Over the next four days, we viewed Beauty and the Beast, Legally Blonde, Curtains, and an off-Broadway play, Inherit the Wind. Although these plays alone would have made for an incredible trip, our activities did not stop there. We were able to participate in three workshops that introduced us to Broadway producers, actors, dancers, and singers. The first workshop taught us about stage combat and gave us some fun new ideas added to our current play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream (opening May 25th). The second was musical theatre, where we were able to meet an actress who was involved in the play The Producers. She taught us the closing song and dance from the show, had us perform it, and gave us some interesting insight about the life of an actor. The last workshop introduced us to the art of bringing acting and expression into dance. Beat by beat, our instructor taught us the steps to a dance and then prompted us to make it our own. The workshops gave us the opportunity to engage in the pieces of theater we had been admiring the entire trip and time to interact with very talented people. Spending five hours in the Metropolitan Museum, taking a ferry to Ellis Island, and touring the various and historical Ballet/ Opera Houses was remarkable and exposed us to just a few more things New York has to offer. There are so many opportunities and so much to do in New York because of its active, fast-paced, and artistic culture. I would recommend this trip to anyone. Besides, rumor has it that there will be another trip next year. Whether it is New York or perhaps…London, this trip is going to be another incredible adventure and should definitely be considered.
