By Amina Ogboro

Eighty-eight years ago women were not allowed to vote, now womem are the majority of voters. Although Hillary Clinton did not win the primary elections, her supporters have helped to convey the power of the female vote. Now that Clinton is out of the race, women continue play a big role in this election. There are a lot of women who supported Clinton. Both Barack Obama and John McCain need those votes. Thirty-nine year-old David Greenberg from New York said, “Women always play a big part in the elections because they are the majority of voters and they usually vote Democrat.” Greenburg said he thinks Clinton’s voters will vote for Obama. He said, “ Most of them will vote for Obama, but he shouldn’t take the votes for granted. There will be a significant number of Clinton’s supporters for McCain. They’ll vote for him because they didn’t like the way pro-Obama media treated Clinton and simply feels Obama just isn’t ready for the position.” Obama’s website dedicates a section to women with links to 21 articles pertaining to issues related to women. “Women have always made the difference in every election, and this year, your voice, your hope will be the deciding factors in forging a new future for America,” Obama wrote. There are many female groups supporting Obama: Primetime Women for Obama, Boomer Women for Obama, Middle -Aged Women for Obama, Women over 50 for Obama, Califorina Women for Obama and Obama Mama’s. Toni Mooney, an administrative assistant for Women, African American and Labor studies at Penn State University said, “Obama is a very strong leader with great ideas that can change this country. McCain is also a strong experienced leader but supports the war, which I worry about.” According to the Wall Street Journal survey, Obama has most of the female votes. Most women that are voting for Obama are voting because he is dedicated to addressing the issues that women are facing, as said the women on the Obama’s website. Recently, a MSNBC reporter said that McCain thinks he could appeal to those “white suburban moms and soccer moms” on the security issue. Obama thinks that a large number of these women are pro-choice and believes he can appeal to those women on the abortion issue. Elanor Clift, a contributor editor for Newsweek, said in interview on MSNBC that most women are not aware of the fact that McCain is pro-life and wants abortions to be illegal. Not only does McCain want to overturn Roe v. Wade, he skipped the vote on equal pay and voted against requiring health care plans to cover birth control. “I think once people’s emotions cool, those that supported Hillary will realize that they really only have one choice” said 41-year-old Cheryl Gay on Obama’s support.
