Boys’ water polo wins BVAL’s for first time in 13 years

Beating the Ygnacio Valley Warriors, CV boys’ water polo has been crowned the BVAL champions for the first time since 1993. Both teams, previously undefeated in league play, battled it out at Cowell Pool on Wed, Oct. 25. In the end, it was the Eagles who triumphed over the Warriors 12-11, making them league champions. CV held a lead from the beginning. However, in the third quarter, the Warriors came back with a vengeance. The scoreboard at the beginning of the fourth quarter showed a score of 11-9, YV. The Eagles were able to pull off three goals in the final quarter, ultimately leading them to victory. The game was also an ideal opportunity for the Eagles to redeem themselves after losing to the Warriors 12-5 at the Reno Tournament on Sept. 9. Because of the previous Warrior Victory, CV was the underdog entering Oct. 25’s game. “From the beginning of the season, we knew that YV would be our toughest game, given our history of close games and emotional outcomes,” said senior Erik Peterson. Senior team captain, Danny Boessenecker was CV’s lead scorer with a total of eight goals. In Reno, Boessenecker was confined to only a single shot. Goalie Kevin Zeidler made an impressive 10 blocks, ahead of YV’s goalie with 8. “We stayed focused and didn’t let the pressure get to us, even when we were down. This win was particularly sweet for me, being a senior and winning league,” added Peterson. The Eagles were seeded twelfth out of twenty entering the NCS Championships. They lost to the fifth-seeded Las Lomas Knights in the second round.
