The epic martial arts film “Fearless” re-enacts the life and times of real life Chinese national hero, Huo Yuanjia, co-founder of the Jinwu Sports Federation and expert fighter. The story is a very predictable one and is a tale of shame and salvation slipped in between the bundles exhilarating combat scenes. Huo’s skills in Kung Fu and his cocky attitude lead to a tragic end of his early fame. He then spends a long term in exile along the country side of 1900’s China and is miraculously discovered by rural farm people who teach him the values of selflessness, thankfulness, mercy, and the simple things of life The film, directed by Ronny Yu (Freddy vs.. Jason & Bride Of Chucky), is in Mandarin, Cantonese and Japanese with English subtitles. The realistic combat scenes have viewers wincing at every blow; the aerial scenes, however, are a slight let down subtracting from the realism of the movie. The film’s main sequence is a highly publicized match in which Huo defends China’s honor against a British boxer, a German spearman, a Spanish fencer, and a Japanese martial artist. Overall, the film’s thrilling action scenes make up for it’s generic plot landing it as an “eight-and-a-half” out of ten. With all the incredible Kung Fu action, the audience remains oblivious to how many clichés lay within the plot, even with that I would recommend “Fearless” for anyone who enjoys a martial arts blockbuster. ]]> Fri, 11 Jan 2008 20:02:00 GMT
