Talking to my mom the other day, we came across the ever-popular subject of the double standard between boys and girls. Now, I can't tell you exactly what she tells me because there are some words in there that well... let's say they wouldn't be appropriate for this forum. But in a nutshell she ends the conversation with, "Boys do things and they are called playboys, Girls do things and they are called harlots. Which would you rather be?" And I go on to say "Ms. Playboy. Hello?"
But sadly life doesn't work that way. Maybe it's my rebellious mind, but why not? I don't understand why a guy can sit with his legs wide open and his pants to his ankles, and a girl has to be all 15th century southern belle, sitting demurely. These are the things that haunt me.
Women fought for their rights to vote and be equal among the masses and you're telling me we can serve in the army but not act the way we feel like? Something is definitely wrong there. My mom will tell me, "the worlds sees girls differently than boys. They get more liberty because they are stronger and can take care of themselves." Really? Because I know a few guys who can't eat, live or breathe without a girl on their arm, and you're telling me I'm the weak one? I don't know about any other girls listening here, but I have proved my metal a million times over. Things a guy can do, I can do too: open jars, walk around with attitudes and pretend to be all bad, buy my own groceries then take them out to the car by myself, change a tire; All these things I can do, So remind me again why I can't go out at all hours like a guy?
Double standards get on my nerves because I live in a world where the contradiction can be seen so easily and yet is constantly looked over. I am tired of being considered the weak sex here. I don't want to be the harlot for something that guys do everyday! I want to be left alone to do what I feel like without the people's judgement. The world needs to care about themselves and not my whereabouts. Mind your own business. Oh and to all the Playboys out there, If I am a harlot for doing what you do, then you are no more than a man harlot! Share in the stigma too.
