The 27th of January, 2010, was an important day in Boone Grove history or was it?
The 27th of January records Boone Grove's first online day ever, as well as for any school in the state of Indiana. Students stayed home and worked on assignments that teachers put up on moodle (a site that is free and lets students enroll in the certain classes that they need to do their work in) for them.
Students were given the leisure of waking up any time they like and doing their work in their own time frame. I actually did all of my work the night before the online day because all of my teachers had posted the assignments up early. I definitely appreciated my teachers posting up the assignments I had to do so early. I like to get my work done right away and I know other students that feel the same way. There were also teachers that posted assignments that were to be done within a certain time frame.
Now that you know a little bit of what online days are, let me talk about what the future might hold for it.
I have talked to Mr. DeRossett about how the online day was received, by parents, students, and other faculty members. From what he says, it was received quite well. There is an online survey for teachers and students on moodle.ptsc.k12.in.us if anyone else would like to submit how they felt the day went. I am sure Mr. DeRossett would love feedback and the faculty members on the online day committee.
I have asked, as many of you have been wondering, whether the online days could eventually replace snow days so that we would not have to make them up at the end of the year. The answer to that is not clear yet because it is not the reason that the online day was done in the first place, but it could be something that stems off of the original plan.
The committee for the online day will be meeting with some people that are going to convey what the state has to say about our little project.
Also, you might be seeing moodle a lot more in weeks to come. Teachers have been encouraged to give students assignments on moodle, so that it will become a lot easier. I know that Ms. Gill has been taking the recommendation into consideration because she has been giving at least one assignment every week on moodle. So don't be surprised if it becomes custom.
Mr. DeRossett said, “Online education is here.”
I agree with Mr. DeRossett. I believe that the future will involve a lot more work with technology and the internet.
We will be having another online day Febuary 24.
