Area 51 -
Advertising

There is without a doubt much secrecy surrounding the secret government base in Groom Lake, Nevada otherwise known as "Area 51." First created in 1955 to secretly test a U-2 spy plane during the cold war, Area 51 has grown to enormous size (about as big as Rhode Island and Connecticut combined) with over 24 hangars, dormitories, a radar tower, 4 runways, and an explosion proof room. Why the government keeps such a base so secret raises many rumors. Some believe they conduct reverse engineering on UFO's or test alien weaponry and technology.

The Government takes great steps to keep their base as secretive as possible without outside intrusion. They have set up a boundary around the base with cameras and motion sensors that detect any movement. The crossing of the boundary will mean use of deadly force, 5 years imprisonment, and a $1000 fine. Employees that work on the base also live very secret lives. They get flown into the base on government bought commercial jets called JANETS. Some believe this stands for Joint Army Navy Transport but nobody really knows for sure. Employees also get codenamed so that even people working together do not know who they really are. T.D. Barnes who was employed at Area 51 between 1968-1972 as an electrical engineer says he worked on top secret aircraft that have been declassified such as the A12 and the F117. He stated, “We did have pseudo names. I had code names... we were nonexistent." During flight tests employees are brought into a blacked out room for up to 2-3 hours at a time.

The reason for all of the rumors surrounding the secretive base come from sightings of UFOs or "Unidentified Flying Objects." These flying objects have been seen flying at night with some of them at unexplained speeds and having strange light displays. Many witnesses have also reported a huge triangle shaped object in the sky that some say accounts for a recently built hangar of immense size. With an immense Air Force base, unidentified flying objects, strange light shows and secrecy, area 51 may be the greatest UFO phenomenon.
