When you go to Downtown Silver Spring to watch a movie at Majestic or go out to eat , the structure that you cannot miss when you’re driving through is the enormous glass like building that has the massive framework of a dinosaur skeleton in the lobby. Many people pass this building but don’t really know what is beyond the dinosaur, but what goes on there is more that you can possibly imagine.
The Discovery Communications Building in Silver Spring is the main headquarters for this entertainment and educational company. Discovery Communications began in 1985 and has 25 entertainment brands that show in 170 countries in 33 languages. Some of its channels include TLC, Discovery Kids, Animal Planet, and The Discovery Channel. It has over 4,000 employees and 1.3 billion subscribers worldwide.
Opened in April 2003, The Discovery Communications building in downtown Silver Spring, when it opened, was a big deal. Silver Spring at that time was just developing, and there had never been such a major building built in the area before.
The opening of the building coincided with the revitalization of the “new” Silver Spring project that is meant to keep the community together and make the area lively and interesting to visitors and locals, and to make it an energetic suburban area. In July 2003 in a speech to the Democratic Leadership Council (DLC) , then Montgomery County Executive Doug Duncan had many important remarks in relation to the importance of the Discovery Communications Building in Silver Spring. “Discovery Communications is a shining example of what a corporate neighbor can be, and we are so proud to have them in Montgomery County,” stated Duncan.
Duncan and other local leaders saw Discovery as not only a strong partner in the revitalization of Silver Spring but also as a staple that helped bring the community together.
According to its website, Discovery Communications is dedicated to making a difference in people’s lives through their content, talent, and viewers. They also want to make a difference on the planet where we live and work, and to see that everywhere is collectively making a effort to “go green.” Discovery has hosted events in Silver Spring to help bring the community together.
The Chamber of Commerce of Silver Spring states that Discovery has hosted a Networking Breakfast open to members of the company and non-members of the company, in order to bring together members of the community.
Even though teenagers pass that building all the time, we fail to realize the importance of Discovery Communications coming into our own community. Meri Kitila, a senior here at Paint Branch, says, “I think that it’s a great opportunity to have such a important building close by.”
The building itself looks interesting on the outside, but what goes on inside the building is more important. The help our community gets from Discovery goes beyond a good-looking facade, so the next time you’re walking past Silver Spring with your friends and pass the Discovery Communications Building, remember all they have done and why the building coming to Silver Spring is exceptional.
