Hispanics in the United States live longer than non-Hispanic whites and blacks, according to
new data from the Center for Disease Control's National Center for Health Statistics.
Hispanic people on the average, outlive both non-Hispanic whites and non-Hispanic blacks by
almost eight years.
“Migration could play a factor," notes Arias; Immigrants are selected for better health, so they
are healthier when they get to the U.S than the general U.S. population."- Elizabeth Arias
But others who deal with Hispanic health say these factors can also hurt Hispanics. Dr. Jane L.
Delgado, the president and CEO of the National Alliance for Hispanic Health, the leading
advocacy group for Hispanic health in the United States, says of Latinas in particular: "We live
longer than non-Hispanic women, but we suffer more from diseases (obesity, diabetes, heart
disease) that compromise the quality of our longer lives."
I think this is interesting, because I didn’t think that a race could live longer then another, I
just thought it was all around the same statistics.
