Roseville High School senior Ela Banerjee founded a creative writing group for middle and high school students called Teen Spark.

The group meets at the Martha Riley library on the second and fourth Wednesday of every month from 4:30-6:00 p.m. Although the club has already begun, Banarjee is still looking for more members.

Senior Alexandra Lee, a member of Teen Spark, finds the club beneficial.

“A meeting usually consists of Ela, myself and a few middle schoolers,” said Lee. “Everybody knows each other and we learn a lot.”

The class is guided by Banerjee and librarian Rachael Prouse, who is the designated Teen Spark advisor.

During the club’s October 13 meeting, author Kim Culbertson hosted an instructional writing workshop. Culbertson offered writing tips to the students and talked about the process getting published.

“We had a good last meeting,” said Lee. “Kim Culbertson, the author, was there and she told us a lot of cool stuff.”

Banerjee created this club in order to help young writers improve their writing and encourage their creativity.

“I really feel that I’ve already learned and know so much about writing, that I want to help young writers and encourage them to [write],” said Banerjee. “Having this group will really encourage young writers and provide a safe peer support group.”
