Would you play the most boring game ever made to benefit a children’s charity? Graham Stark, Paul Saunders, Matt Wiggins, Kathleen DeVere, and the rest of the comedy tour de force known as LoadingReadyRun do! Every year on November 19, the Canadian sketch comedy crew LoadingReadyRun holds their Desert Bus for Hope Online Charity Event to raise money for the Child’s Play Charity. Here’s how it works, Smoke and Mirror’s Desert Bus is an unreleased Sega CD game where one drives a bus from Tucson, Arizona to Las Vegas, Nevada; the catch: this is a simulation of the real 8 hour drive it takes to travel that distance. Each member of the sketch comedy crew gets their turn to drive the bus for a predetermined amount of time on live streaming webcam. While they drive the bus, people can donate money to keep them driving, which will allow them to keep earning money for charity, and will open the rest of the crew to be your personal lackeys.
To elaborate, while one of the crew is driving the bus back and forth, the rest are at your disposal to do certain challenges. For example: you could donate $100 to have the LoadingReadyRun crew do a reenactment of a scene from the movie Fight Club, or you could have them sing “Sweet Transvestite” from The Rocky Horror Picture Show. You could even get one of them to dress in a ridiculous outfit and spew the most random assortment of phrases for your own entertainment. Not only will you be able to make the crew do ridiculous things, but you can also bid on some amazing items during the charity event. Last year, not only did they auction off shirts, and exquisitely made crafts, but video games, hand drawn sketches done by professional comic artists (such as Ken “Value Added” Stacey) and rare nerd memorabilia was also auctioned off during the event.
All the money goes to the Child’s Play charity, which is focused on getting toys and video games to children’s hospitals all across the US and Canada. So whether you are donating $100 to get Kathleen to do Caramelldansen, $1,000 for an original Star Wars anniversary parody poster, or just $10 to keep the Desert Bus moving on, you are helping. Each day is a new and hilarious experience when you are riding on the Desert Bus for Hope, so why don’t you come on down and lend a hand?
