Every year, there is a pristine event. One that honors the best in film for the year. Although to be nominated is an honor itself, everyone attending wants to win the Oscar. But, on the other hand, there are the Razzies. The awards that ruin the films nominated. Since it is a shame to be nominated, everyone attending wants someone else to win the Razzie. The Golden Raspberrry Award Foundation announced the 2011 Razzie nominees on January 24. There are a total of five Worst Picture nominations, five for both Worst Actor and Worst Actress, and five nominations for Worst Supporting Actor and Actress. (List of nominations are at end of story.)
The 31st Razzie Awards, taking place on February 26 (they are not being televised), have a total of five Worst Picture nominations. It seems clear that nothing can beat out Sex and the City 2, which has a total of seven Razzie nominations out of eleven awards. But Vampires Suck, a spoof on the film series which also shares a Razzie nomination, could be a close second. Having spared myself from these two films, the terrible reviews added with these nominations make it seem like I’ll never see them. There is one film whose inclusion is shocking: The Bounty Hunter. This is not a Razzie worthy movie. It isn’t an Oscar worthy movie either, but it isn’t as terrible as some of the other films nominated. Does no one remember the pain of Kristen Bell’s When in Rome, America Ferrara’s Our Family Wedding, Katherine Heigl’s Killers, Robert DeNiro’s Little Fockers, or even Brendan Fraser’s Furry Vengeance? But The Bounty Hunter is easily better than all these films, even if only by a little bit.
It seems the first choice for Worst Actor would be Robert Pattinson, who has only played one kind of role since after his appear in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire; depressed, emotional, disturbed, and basically the sorry-for-himself teenager. But, if Pattinson doesn’t win, Lautner would be a clear second guess. He doesn’t even act in those Twilight movies; he just takes his shirt off. To be an actor, some believability is necessary there. The same applies for being an actress. It seems that Sex and the City 2 can do no right, and will easily take the Razzie for Worst Actress, due to the fact its bad times four. If the “Gal Pals” don’t take away the Razzie, it could be either Megan Fox or Kristen Stewart. Megan Fox was basically in Jonah Hex so that the film had teen appeal, an appeal that was lost when her Southern belle accent was heard in the first trailer; while Kristen Stewart’s performance in Eclipse has frequently been referred to as a block of wood.
When it comes to the worst supporting actor, it seems clear to me that if an actor is up for three nominations, he’s going to take home the Razzie. George Lopez is most likely up for this award because, well, he plays George Lopez in all of these movies. There’s no critical acting quality to either of this films, and I can vouch for that for Marmaduke and Valentine’s Day. Although George Lopez isn’t a fun character to watch, there’s not much acting quality. If Lopez is spared the Razzie, Billy Ray Cyrus could be a close second. I skipped out on The Spy Next Door (thankfully), but from the trailers I saw he seemed bland, cheesy, and all around bad. When it comes to Worst Supporting Actress, the same principle of, “the more nominations you have, the more likely you are to win,” comes into effect once again. Jessica Alba is up for this category for a staggering four films, only one of which I’ve seen. What is there to be said for Jessica Alba? In acting quality, she’s not too bad. Not when she plays different characters. But apparently she’s played the same character in every movie, just in Machete her character has brown hair and a REALLY BIG gun. However, if the Razzie is willing, she might be sparred; and if she’s sparred it’s anyone of these actresses shame.
Now, a new category in the Razzies is one I think has been coming for a long time: The Most Eye-Gouging use of 3D award. In this modern-day society, it’s time we stopped and looked at how, and why 3D became such a fad, when the only truly exceptional 3D films are films like Avatar, Despicable Me…and others I can’t think of, when other uses of 3D are so flat you have to take of your glasses to make sure you got some of your money’s worth. The nominations for this category are Cast and Dogs 2: The Revenge of Kitty Galore, Clash of the Titans, The Last Airbender, The Nutcracker 3D, and Saw 3D. The obvious winner here is Saw 3D, and that’s only based on the trailer. The 3D in the film is bound to resemble some 50s-quality work, especially when you see a trailer for the movie and it shows the bad guy reaching out into the audience and picking up an audience member. Does House of Wax ring a bell?! The only way that Saw 3D would be sparred is if there were some more room to bash on The Last Airbender, which had 3D that was exceptionally flat.
The final category: Worst Screen Couple/Ensemble. The nominees for this category are Jennifer Aniston and Gerard Butler for The Bounty Hunter, Josh Brolin’s Face and Megan Fox’s Accent for Jonah Hex, the entire cast of The Last Airbender, the entire cast of Sex and the City 2, and the entire cast of Eclipse. I think the dead giveaway in this category is Josh Brolin’s Face and Megan Fox’s accent for this category. First of all, Josh Brolin and Megan Fox are a bad screen couple to start; second of all, when you give Megan Fox a bad Southern Belle accent and Josh Brolin a lump for the second half of his face…it is not going to end well. People having only seen the trailer will agree with this statement. The only reason I am slightly hesitant on the one-hundred percent likely hood of those two winning, is because Sex and the City 2 is once again featured prominently in this category.
