An overlooked genre in the video game industry is driving games, as most are very repetitive, but "Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit" offers a completely new experience.
"Hot Pursuit" is the 16
th entry into the sixteen year old EA series, and is a reboot of the original "Hot Pursuit" that was released in 1998.
It offers a story mode that allows gamers to control a police officer chasing down suspects, or a suspect racing against others while avoiding police attacks. It also brings you an online mode where you can play against 7 others in various game modes.
In the multiplayer there are three different ways of playing. The most entertaining comes out of "Hot Pursuit" where four players take the roles of street racers trying to win lengthy races, while the other four are police officers trying to prevent the racers from reaching their goal.
The lesser played modes are "Race" which is a free-for-all between you and seven others trying to finish a race first, and "Interceptor" which is a head-to-head game mode where one player is a driver, the other, an officer. The driver is trying to escape the opponent, while the officer attempts to destroy their car and bring them to a stop.
"Need For Speed" takes a step up from the typical "turn left and right" of a driving and adds in various equipment that will allow you to takedown opponents quicker. Elements such as spike strips, helicopters, and police roadblocks completely shake up any race and keep action at an impressive high at all times.
The game offers massive amounts of cars to drive, which are grouped into five sections based on their speed. You can take hold of a Ford that hits top speeds of 160, or a Bugatti that can reach 260 miles per hour.
The single player holds just as much replay value as the multiplayer, as there are hundreds of different missions where you can pick whether you want to break the law, or be the enforcer. As you unlock more cars your goals become bigger and it becomes more addicting and tough to beat.
"Need For Speed" also introduces a feature called Autolog, where each mission becomes a challenge to see if you can beat your friends times. When you are beaten by someone, the game alerts you, and you will go right back to continue the fight for your top spot. It brings in a whole new level of competition and replayability to the game.
"Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit" is a fresh take on the racing genre of video games with a well-rounded story mode and multiplayer along with tons of friendly competition involved.
