Lincoln Baseball- Getting back in the groove
Lincoln baseball is under way and it’s only March. Spring training has started for the pros and winter workouts have begun for the Rails.
Hitting has started since the beginning of February and the Rails have been working hard with Coach Mahoney. Coach Mahoney is the father of Freshman Blake Mahoney and his older son is a former graduate of Lincoln and went to UCONN for baseball. Pat went to the pros and made it to AAA in the Cubs organization.
Coach Mahoney has been doing the right thing by getting one of his sons into the league, and the other played on the sophomores as an 8th grade last season.
Indoor workouts at Southridge Mall started February 22nd. During the indoor workouts the pitchers get some pre season pitching with the varsity catchers, Senior Kyle Simpson and Junior Trey Alessio. What helps the players the most during the workouts is getting a lot of swings in before the season. If you are a position player and don’t pitch or catch, you just hit for two hours, getting many cuts.
“It’s a good thing to have. We need all the practice we can get to meet our expectations this season,” says Senior Brady Cooper.
“We’re a really young team and we are going to have to use as many people as it takes to make it a successful year but I think were better than what people give us credit for,” says Senior Kyle Simpson.
The baseball team is looking forward to warmer weather to get on the field rather than being indoors in a little facility. Once the pitchers get outside they can start throwing bullpen sessions which means throwing more than they do indoors. The position players will get to play to take infield and outfield to get ready for tryouts and practice that starts in May.
The first game of the season for the Rails is May 26th verse Fort Dodge at Home for the Rails.
