Bicycle Motocross, also known as BMX, is a recent addition to sports. Created and sanctioned in the early 1970's, it started out as a hobby for young riders. This concept is what Freshman Tyger Hoffman plays on while he rides.

At only seven years old, Hoffman began BMX. A friend's dad rode and seeing him ride inspired Hoffman to try the sport himself. With help from his inspiration, he dove into the tricks.

Although Hoffman has struggled as he has learned how to ride, the list of tricks he can do has expanded.

"[The hardest part is] falling down and getting back up," said Hoffman.

However, enduring this pain has paid off. Along with the standard wheelie, he can sit on the handlebars and pedal backwards and a trick he calls the holy man: where Hoffman stands on the back pegs and ride with no hands.

Hoffman's first bike was a Mongoose because it was affordable. Now, he more often rides his Hoffman bike because has a light build. However, Hoffman doesn't have his ideal bike yet.

"Kink because they're a really well built bike," said Hoffman about his dream bike.

Although he hasn't entered a competition yet, Hoffman hopes to someday. He would like to participate in a free-style contest. His biggest obstacle in achieving this is a lack of a bike park in the area.

Even though his mom struggles to watch him bike, due to the risk, his friends are supportive of his aspirations. When biking together, they challenge each other and, even though Hoffman is ahead, many of his friends can keep up.

If considering trying out BMX yourself, Hoffman has advice to share.

"You're going to need to be coordinated and you're going to have to have a lot of balance and you're going to need to be tough about falling," said Hoffman. "You just need to get back up and keep trying. Don't give up, you can do it."

Whether BMX is a prospect as a career or not is yet to be determined, but Hoffman wants to continue in the sport.

"I hope that whatever path I choose, I'll still be into riding my bike, even when I get a car," said Hoffman.

With aspiration to achieve more, Hoffman will continue to advance his skills for as long as he will ride BMX.
