Recently, after having watched the movie Bullied: A Student, A School and A Case that Made History ~ The Jamie Nabozny Story the Journalism I class conducted a survey on bullying and collected almost one hundred responses from BHS students and analyzed the information. Responses were gathered from an equal number of male and female students as well as a cross section of 9th-12th grade students.
The data revealed that about half of BHS students believe bullying is a problem at BHS. Also, about 50% of the school’s population has seen bullying occur and that students haven’t seen anything done about it. (see related story on "The Bystander Effect")
Though about one in five (or 21%) of students believe that there are no serious consequences for bullies, alternately, almost 80% believe that there are consequences.
As one student recounted, “ Recently, my friends got into trouble for picking on a kid and the BHS administrators took the incident very seriously,” the junior said. “In my opinion, they weren’t even being mean to him; they were just joking, but the administrators didn’t give them (the bullies) any leeway.”
Another interesting statistic is that about 40% of BHS students know someone who is afraid to come to school for fear of being harassed. This was the same situation that occurred in the Bullied movie and it lead to the main character Jamie Nabozny actually running away from home.
