At-a-glance

Watching a football game from the bleachers is OK, but students seeking a birds-eye view should get into the press box. Photo by Matt Lambert -

As a senior, one’s knowledge of the school building is vastly different from a freshman’s perspective. There is more to CHS than meets the eye. This should be a helpful guide to expose some of the less-known areas of the building students come to every day.
BATHROOMS
There are bathrooms in the school and on occasion, students must use them. But the quietest and most comfortable bathrooms take more than a walk down the hallway. Experienced students know that the bathroom in the north hall across from the teachers’ lounge is often a good choice. It is rarely visited because it is far away from most of the school’s classrooms.
The greatest possible privacy is achieved in the theatre departments bathrooms located stage left. Students willing to venture to the auditorium will be rewarded by a spacious bathroom with a single toilet and perfect silence.
WORKSHOP
The shop yard is located next to the bus loop and senior parking lot on the north side of the school. It is an open courtyard where metal and wood is stored for the shop classes. The workshop itself is self-explanatory. What is surprising is the amount of dangerous equipment in the workshop. There are many different types of saws and even welding stations available for students to use in class.
AUDITORIUM
There is more to the auditorium than meets the eyes of students sitting in it. The largest classroom in the building, where Mr. Helm teaches, is behind the stage. The tech room is behind the seats and someone in it controls the lights, music and microphones during productions. Adventurous students may be interested in knowing that there is a crawlspace (used for storage) under the floor of the stage. There are also storage rooms above the dressing rooms on either side of the stage. These look mysterious because their entrances are large doors a story above the stage with no stairs leading to them.
PRESS BOX
For a great view of a football game or track meet, try getting into the press box. It has a large staircase with three small rooms at the top. The press box houses announcers and coaches during events and as the name indicates, members of media publications like the Coeur d’Alene Press.
OFFICE
It seems rudimentary, but the office holds more than most students know. The front office is where Karen Garrett, Tricia Benefiel and Judy Mayotte can be found. For money concerns, see Benefiel. Mayotte is the activities secretary. She collects bus fees and activities contracts. Garrett seems to know everything about anything going on at CHS. And, if she can’t help you, she will be able to point you in the right direction. Also, in the front office is the infirmary, copy room, a conference room, the principal’s office and the athletic director’s office.
The other half of the office is the counselors’ side. Your guidance counselor’s office is there, along with the desk of Lori Humphries. Humphries is to be seen by anyone with concerns about scholarships or class schedules.
Also, on the side of the office is LeOrla Jackson at the attendance desk. Jackson should be seen by students who have been or are going to be absent. Finally, the school resource officer, registrar and vice-principal’s offices are all in this part of the office.
BASEMENT
The office also sits over the school’s small basement. The basement is used by student council for storage space. Also, in the basement is cheerleader storage space, old records and the Viking Vault. The Viking Vault provides school supplies for any student who can’t afford things like binders, notebooks or backpacks.
HITTING ROOM
The hitting room is behind the balcony in Jordan Court. It is used by the baseball, softball and golf teams during the winter months. A large closet space is also used by the football team to store pads and helmets. The hitting room is simply a large, rectangular room with nets used to keep balls from damaging the walls.
WRESTLING ROOM
Similar to the hitting room, it is on the second floor located between Jordan Court and Viking Court. It is large and has a padded floor. This is where the wrestlers practice before they hold their matches on the floor of Jordan Court.
