This evening I watched a video of a boy, who stood on a stage, to perform his spoken word to an audience. The voice of this boy showed every implication that he was of early youth. Yet, the passion he exuded and the words he expressed all glorified his wisdom beyond his years.
Hampton Roads stepped on stage wearing a white t-shirt with jeans. Nonetheless, his simplistic clothing was complimented by his intricate words and compassion for his topic at hand: Hunger in America. He began his performance with the name: Derek.
After the introduction of the mysterious character, Hampton began to thoroughly explain the troubles Derek and his family had to face as Soup Kitchen attendees and well-fare recipients.
The flow of his words bound by his clever sentences were enough to leave the crowd in one of two states, Speechless or in awe.
Later, he briefly shifted from speaking about Derek and his misfortune, and began to speak about people who take the luxury of having a meal for granted. As he did this, I began to think about my past decisions pertaining to food, and found myself becoming ashamed. I had than realized that I have been one of those people.
At the end, Hampton lifted the mystery of who Derek was, and it turns out...well, you'll just have to find out for yourself.
