What is Drafting?

Drafting is practically a fancy way of saying Mechanical Drawing, but instead of using just a pencil or pen you use tools (rulers, protractors and compasses). Now with all the stuff you can do on the computer, they do a good amount of the projects on computers. This year Drafting will be in the second trimester and it will be fifth period.

In drafting this year, people will be working on ten different projects; at least five will be on the computer and the other half by hand using pencils or pens. Some of the stuff they will work on is: A floor plan to a house, design a robot, draw Celtic knots and assemble 3D projects. At the end of the trimester, even if you are already good at drawing, everybody will improve in their artistic ability.

Mr. Conway is the teacher of this class and the only teacher; he was the one who offered the class to Mr. Graham who approved and allowed the class to be at the school. Mr. Conway also teaches seventh grade Science and Creative Engineering. Creative Engineering seems to be more popular so, they made it two trimesters, although drafting sounds like a lot of fun too. This is the third year of Drafting and the last years were very successful, so hopefully this year is will be even more fun!

The majority of the class has a lot of fun, it’s an enrichment but it still takes effort. You will have more confidence in drawing though. Just to add to the fun, Mr. Conway is the teacher and he is an amazing Artist! When he was in college he wanted to be an architect, but then he took a different path and became a Science teacher. He has been hired from high schools and children’s museums to design and paint murals on the libraries walls or any other walls they could find.

Mr. Conway has always loved art; he enjoys Drawing, Mechanics and Architecture. Mr. Conway’s first drafting class he took was when he was in high school, he liked the class a lot (it was one of his favorite classes). After he took that drafting class he looked more and more into drafting. Mr. Conway found out that he liked it even more than he thought, because now he is the teacher of the class, not just the student.
