Harold and Kumar: A Very 3D Christmas is exactly what the commercials would lead you to believe. It's rude, crass, offensive and completely hilarious. It begins a few years since the two stoner friends had parted ways. Harold is an accomplished wall street banker while Kumar is continuing to wallow in his cloud of pot smoke. After a unexpected event leads to Harold's family Christmas tree being burned to the ground, the two friends embark on a wild journey through New York to find a replacement. Through their misadventures, they realize that their friendship can overcome all obstacles.
Compared to the previous installments, A Very 3D Christmas tries to develop the relationship between the two friends into more than just a 2D, paper thin facade. They make a valiant effort that definitely improves over the prequels, but it still falls flat. But to be honest, people don't go to see a Harold and Kumar movie for emotional experience. They go for a hilarious, offensive, insane, pot-smoking ride. This film will not let you down.
The top five 'high' points are:
5. Neil Patrick Harris getting kicked out of Heaven 4. A waffle making robot killing two gangsters with boiling syrup.
3. Harold almost getting raped by the daughter of a dangerous mobster.
2. "Gay" Neil Patrick Harris making an advance on one of his backup dancers.
1. A two year old getting hooked on cocaine.
Of course, you can't ignore the 3D aspect when it's mentioned in the title. It is bold, brash, and literally in your face. The 3D is as gimmicky as at a theme park. Avatar it is not. Flaming Christmas trees, squirts of boiling syrup, and puffs of smoke all fly at the audience fairly constantly. While some might find it tiring, it didn't bother me.
Overall, Harold and Kumar: A Very 3D Christmas is exactly what a Harold and Kumar movie should be. It's funny, blatantly offensive and a really good ride.
