During the holiday season, the City of Knoxville Special Events Office produces an event called “Christmas in the City.” It is comprised of multiple Christmas themed attractions held at various locations and dates throughout the city.
The first attraction is “Comcast Christmas at Chilhowee Park.” The park boasts a lake of lighted floating trees, pictures with Santa, horse drawn wagon rides, and Mayfield Snow Cream all free of charge on Friday December 9 starting at 6 p.m.
The Special Events Office also coordinated the decorations and lights downtown, and the Riviera Stadium 8 on Gay Street has a lineup of new releases opening December 9, 16, and 21 that you can see while downtown. Show times and ticket prices can be found on REDmovies.com.
One of the Special Events Offices’s most popular “Christmas in the City” attractions is “Holidays on Ice”, an open-air ice rink in Market Square. The rink is open every day through January 8 except for Christmas Day. Admission is $10 for adults and $7 for children 12 and under.
To celebrate New Year’s Eve, the city hosts an event called “First Night Knoxville” on December 31 starting at 3 p.m. The event is a celebration of the arts, and Market Square will be full of music, dancing, vendors, and amusements. Fireworks at midnight will celebrate bringing in the New Year.
