Since lacrosse was announced to be the new spring sport, it has become commonplace to see students tossing lacrosse balls around in the quad and on the back field.

The team already has 17 students signed up.

Junior Donald Hutchinson was among the group of students, such as, junior Cooper Jackman, senior Cabot Jackman, freshmen Skovran Cunningham and Ethan Ham, who pushed for the team and gained the support of teachers Brooke Wells and Andy Cunningham.

“When I first came to country Day eight years ago, I suggested we start a lacrosse team,” Wells said.

Lacrosse, a sport that’s just recently begun picking up popularity in California, is fast-paced, requiring strategy, skill and agility.

Similar to soccer and hockey, the objective of the sport is to throw the rubber lacrosse ball into the opposing team’s goal. Whichever team has the most goals after four, twelve minute periods wins.

Although the team’s first official practice is not until Feb. 6, members have begun attending semi-regular, unofficial practices, as well as practicing during their free time so that they have the basic skills down by the time the season starts.

The team will play most of its games against Bay Area teams because there are few small school teams in the area.

The games were scheduled for weekends, so they will not conflict with other sports.
