Lucky first-year medical careers students traveled to the INOVA Heart and Vascular Institute on December 12th to witness open-heart surgery.
More specifically, the group witnessed two surgeries: One was a coronary artery bypass grafting surgery, and the other a repair of a mitral valve. The former was done to restore blood flow to the heart muscle after being afflicted with coronary artery disease. The other was a surgery of the valve located between the two left chambers of the heart.
The students traveled to see an application of their studies on cardiovascular anatomy and physiology. They also observed the different roles medical professionals take in surgery, from cardiothoracic surgeons to physician assistants.
Teacher Ms. Taylor-Tolbert commented, “It is important for the students to realize that the care of a surgical patient is a…total team effort.”
