The varsity wrestling team fell short of adding yet another dual match title last weekend, as they were defeated by Cuhyoga Valley Christian Academy in their championship match 38-18 Saturday, Jan. 28 while competing at the West Virginia Duals held at Parkersburg High School.
South, known for its superb wrestling program, lost their first dual match in a little under four years. With an extravagant winning streak, the boys came into the match looking for their 116th consecutive dual match title. A tough loss for everyone, junior Jordan Quicho said “We came out flat against CVCA.” Quiocho also added that, “It doesn’t feel good to be part of the team that broke the streak.”
“We wrestled really hard. Everybody came out and gave 100 percent,” senior Steven Brogle said. Not only did the Patriots wrestle hard as a team, but also came away with some great individual accomplishments. Senior David Jeffery won his 200th career match, while seniors Steven Brogle and Tyler Karcher both came away from the tournament with their 150th career match wins.
Brogle said he believes they need to work harder in preparation for their next dual match. “We need to practice harder and I think everyone realizes now that we’re not the best out there and we need to pick it up,” Brogle said.
Freshmen Gary Hall says, “We are running alot more and trying to get in shape. We are definitely working harder.”
The boys defeated both Nelsonville York 62-13 and George Washington 58-13 at home Thursday, Feb. 2.
