This year, the Varsity Girls Basketball has begun as consistent as they have ever been. They currently stand at second of the Mission Valley League right behind their long-term rival, Rosemead. The team has a record of 6-1 while Rosemead leads 7-0 with one more victory against Arroyo. In their cumulative record, the Knights stand at 15-8.

On January 18, the Panthers were able to gain an advantage of the Knights with a score of 36-30 which placed them ahead of the Knights in League. Coach Gorball has stated “The team needs to stay focused and get the ball where we want it offensively. Since the game, the team has been working on focusing more.” Captain Michelle Trieu commented on the loss and said, “I was very disappointed because it turned out to be a very close game. We were nervous, and it wasn’t a good day. Even if we played great defense we did not execute offensively like the way we wanted to.”

Fortunately, the Knights bounced back against South El Monte who they beat with a healthy margin of 61-32 on January 20. They have since gone up against Gabrielino and El Monte and won with scores 42-25 and 44-27 respectively. Trieu commented on their progress “After the tough loss, we all left it behind us and worried about the next game. We took the loss and learned something from it. We all understood that we cannot give up another game so we are determined to come out extra strong second round of the season.”

In most recent game has been on January 1 against Mountain View where the team won with a 50-19 margin. However, Coach Gorball states, “The team still could have done better.”

Their next game will be against Rosemead, which is an exciting chance for redemption for the Knights. As for their chances at being League champions, Coach Gorball remained evasive and did not say whether the team would definitely be the champions this year.
