It’s award season again and the Oscar nominations were revealed January 24.

The 84th annual Academy Awards will take place at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood on February 26.

Of course, nominees include the handsome men George Clooney and Brad Pitt and amazing women like Meryl Streep and Glenn Close, who have all been nominated quite few times in the past.

This year, there are some like Rooney Mara from The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Jean Dujardin from the silent film, The Artist, that have been nominated for the first time for an Oscar award.

A surprising nomination includes funny guy Jonah Hill, nominated for Best Supporting Role in Moneyball. This nomination was totally an upgrade from all the MTV nominations, proving that he is an actor that can be taken serious.

The Academy Award winners, after all, are chosen by 6,000 members that are serious about the film industry and aren’t worried whether teen sensations like Justin Bieber and Taylor Lautner won the Teen Choice Awards.

Best Actor in a Leading Role includes Demián Bichir, George Clooney, Jean Dujardin, Gary Oldman and Brad Pitt.

Julia’s pick to win this award: Gary Oldman, also known as Sirius Black from the Harry Potter franchise, or George Clooney, which women swoon at the sound of his name. Both Oldman and Clooney have been claimed of doing exceptional in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (Oldman) and The Descendants (Clooney). Demián Bichir and Jean Dujardin, for which most people might say “Who is that?” might have a chance at the award, but usually first time nominees don’t receive the award.

Glenn Close, Viola Davis, Rooney Mara, Meryl Streep and Michelle Williams have been nominated for Actress in a Leading Role. Julia’s pick: Viola Davis. This woman made many people cry in her role as Aibileen Clark in The Help. Now, if she made men cry during the movie, she well deserves this award, especially if they admitted to shedding a few tears.

Actor in a Supporting Role includes Kenneth Branagh, Jonah Hill, Nick Nolte, Christopher Plummer and Max van Sydow. Actress in a Supporting Role includes Bérénice Bejo, Jessica Chastain, Melissa McCarthy, Janet McTeer and Octavia Spencer. Julia’s pick: Christopher Plummer seems like the strongest contender to win the Oscar for Supporting Actor and continue his winning streak; since he has won most of the nominations he’s had for Beginners. Octavia Spencer who starred in The Help alongside Viola Davis recently won the Golden Globe award for Best Supporting Actress early January seems like a sure bet at winning the Oscar. Like her character said, “Minny don’t burn chicken,” she’ll hopefully win the award and take the chicken home with her.

Best Picture nominees are The Artist, The Descendants, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, The Help, Hugo, Midnight in Paris, Moneyball, The Tree of Life and War Horse. With so many nominations, it is difficult to choose who might win. Julia’s pick: Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close with Sandra Bullock, Tom Hanks and Thomas Horn is a film about the 9/11 incident that impacted the lives of a wife and son after losing a loved one. Although it has received mixed reviews from critics, it has potential that has captivated many.

Watching the Academy Awards is an experience where people are recognized for their talent and where the films nominated have changed people’s views on different matters. Many people worked together in making a piece of art and winning an Oscar only reassures that they have been acknowledged.
