2,000 dollars. That amount of money can buy a designer handbag, a computer, or a plane ride to Europe. Now, look at 12,000 dollars. That is an immense amount of money in comparison. However, the Pikesville High School music department wants to raise that much money in order to purchase grand piano. They have already gotten 2,000 dollars out of the sum.

The Music Boosters, a parent-run group aiming to help the music department and enrich the experience of the young musicians in PHS, hope to aid Mr. Gartner and Mr. Wilson in receiving the piano. This group does all they can to get the word out about the piano, for a new piano will provide a better musical experience for all.

“The current piano is very old and in very poor condition,” Tracy Lavin (one of the Music Boosters and mother of PHS oboist Elizabeth Lavin) said. “We intend to purchase a used piano in excellent condition.”

Any time a student wants to come to the many concerts that the music department holds, the Music Boosters are there right in front, passing out raffle tickets or manning a bake sale. Along with these fundraisers, the Music Boosters hope to find success in other ways to get the money.

“We are launching a new fundraiser with a company called Marketday. We will be selling prepared, prepackaged frozen foods ready to be picked up-up on designated days at PHS,” Lavin said.

The music department also gets the word out to gain support and donations through advertising. Numerous posters fill the hallways to raise awareness and pique the attention of the many students and teachers that walk through PHS, which will get them closer to their overall goal. To them, the piano will provide a significantly positive impact.

“A high quality, well maintained instrument is essential in rehearsal and performances,” Lavin said. “The sound of a concert grand is unparalleled for classical music, both choral and instrumental.”

Even though they still seek a large amount of money, the Music Boosters and Mr. Gartner and Mr. Wilson refuse to be discouraged from getting the instrument. The piano will provide a better accompanist for the student musicians; however, the goal date to achieve the piano is fast approaching.

“We would like to have the piano by the Spring Concert, so please support our fundraiser,” Lavin said. “If you know of individuals, businesses, or organizations that can make a donation, please contact Music Boosters at pikesvillemusicboosters@gmail.com or contact Mr. Wilson or Mr. Gartner.”
