With students checking out and parents calling in, the administration is noticing a trend: students getting sick.
The Center for Disease Control has labeled Oklahoma as a state with "widespread" flu for the week of February 19-25. It seems the flu has finally hit the school, among other illnesses.
Oklahoma City has also been under a Local Pollen Alert from the National Weather Service for the last two weeks. Sniffling students suffering from seasonal allergies coupled with those sick with the flu are everywhere in the building.
Those infected with the flu can be contagious one day before symptoms start, and can remain contagious for five to seven days after symptoms start, according to kidshealth.org. If you have the flu, do not take aspirin. You should also see a doctor to get tested for the flu.
If you are out for several days and see a doctor for your symptoms, get a signed note from your doctor to turn into the front office. Medical absences do not count toward your total absences for the semester.
Also, if you are not feeling well, have a fever, and have flu-like symptoms, it is in the best interest of both you and the school if you stay home and rest.
To prevent the flu, get a flu shot. Washing your hands and avoiding those with symptoms can also help prevent getting the flu.
